This year we may be tempted with Fantasy Colors® poinsettias such as Blue Splash, Lilac Ice, or Fuschia Star at one of our local stores. There are 10 Fantasy Colors, including Gold Splash and Golden Melody, as well as several options for glitter.

Generally, I am fairly conservative and traditional when it comes to holiday customs. However, over the years I’ve been hypnotized by the many new colors and shapes of poinsettias. I have purchased pink, white, and streaked poinsettias with names like Monet, Jingle Bells, and Christmas Rose. Now, the market is pushing color options even further by painting poinsettias in very nontraditional colors. And don’t forget the sprinkles! In addition to paint, many poinsettias are adorned with colorful glitter and sparkles.

Would you like to find a poinsettia to match your holiday decor in some color scheme other than red? Your elegant holiday table or dramatic entry could feature a lilac painted poinsettia with gold sprinkles. A Blue Splash with silver glitter would make an unforgettable display on your buffet. Since poinsettias can be painted in many colors, everyone can have a favorite color theme. It may even be possible to choose poinsettias to match a your favorite sport’s team or college colors. Anyone for Aggie burgundy poinsettias? Pink, purple, and lime green feather trees were the rage during the last holiday season. Obviously, many homeowners are experimenting with less-than-traditional color schemes in their homes. Now they can add poinsettias painted in these neon colors to complete the show or to create a pleasantly shocking surprise.

This new trend began in Europe about eight years ago. The concept arrived on our East and West Coasts around 2004. Many of the large chain stores have added these fanciful poinsettias to their holiday presentations.

Painted poinsettias require the same treatment as the traditional holiday plant. They like indirect sun, warmth, and regular water. Their ideal temperature is 70-75 degrees in the day and 60-65 degrees at night. It is recommended that painted poinsettias be watered below the bracts, as watering from above the leaves can cause the dye to wash off.

This year, be adventurous with a holiday favorite. We may still have traditional red, white or pink poinsettias, but you just can’t resist the new Fantasy® Colors.
