The influence of the region has even flowed over into interior design, where it has become the essence of many incredibly designed homes and spaces. This year’s edition of Be Inspired takes a closer look at how the raw beauty of the Southwest can be your guide and inspiration for your next design project.
The Root of Southwest Style
The style of the region has been redefined numerous times over the decades but somehow still retains that timeless, rustic feel the Southwest is known for. The true essence and identity of Southwest style is most authentically found in the little adobe homes that line the Rio Grande and the old churches found throughout the region that tell the tales of days gone by. Decades ago, these structures were created only from what could be cultivated from the land, therefore the style of the region has a very earthy feel – as though the structures are not foreign or imposing of the environment, but rather just an extension of it – as you start to plan your Southwest-inspired space keep in mind this key element.
Colors
The colors that are typical in Southwest designs are also reflective of nature. Take for example the blue that trims the windows of many older adobe homes, is the same blue of a clear summer sky. The color palette of the Southwest ranges from neutral earth tones to lively pinks, purples, oranges and blues. The contrast between the muted and vibrant tones is one of the reasons the colors of the region have such a dynamic presence. By simply watching a sunset or taking a nature hike you’ll be able to identify all the colors you need for your new space.
Textures
Southwest style, unlike many of the other design types, not only stimulates your eyes but also your sense of touch; as raw and unrefined textures are common throughout these types of spaces. Rough, rugged and imperfect surfaces are all welcomed and embraced in this style type.
Traditional Elements
No matter how much the style of the Southwest has evolved classic elements like adobe walls, ceilings made of vigas and latillas, natural stone floors and Saltillo tile have never been outdated.
Ambiance
Southwestern spaces always seem to be warm, homey and inviting by often incorporating personal touches such as heirlooms and family photos. The color palette used in this style is a main contributor to evoking these feelings.
Make it your own
Identifying a style type merely gives you a general direction for you design projects—in no way should it limit you from doing what you want to do. Don’t be afraid to create a style all your own.
