Projects Under $100:
Replacing Hardware

Is your early 1980s kitchen stuck in the decade of big hair, footless tights and Kevin Bacon? Is your bathroom suffering from the outdated pink or blue tubs of the 1950s? Short of spending upwards of $10,000 on a whole new one (not including top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances and brand new Jacuzzi bathtub), there is a way to update your kitchen or bath to give it a new or like-new appearance: with new hardware.

Knobs & Pulls
Even if your kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanities suffer from being outdated or boring, a surefire way to bring them up-to-date is with all new hardware. Just changing the knobs on cabinets and the pulls on your drawers can add sophistication to the overall look of your kitchen or bath.

Depending on the “look” you are trying to achieve in your kitchen or bathroom, new hardware can add to that look by just changing the design or shape of the hardware or shifting the focus from dingy cabinets to knobs that could serve as a conversation piece in your home.

Brushed silver or stainless steel can help transform your kitchen by bringing a modern flair to the overall appearance. Modern design relies heavily on simplicity, so if your existing cabinets are ornate or lean heavily toward “country,” skip the modern accessories and opt for a more traditional look.

Cabinets with a large amount of molding or designs can often be distracting enough without adding over-the-top hardware. For cabinets that are natural wood or plain in nature, earth tones and simple design can take your kitchen to the next level.

For plain cabinets, jazz it up with pulls and knobs that have character, are large and have a real presence in your space. Keep in mind: make sure you don’t overwhelm small drawers and cabinets with too-large hardware.
