As far back as I can remember I have been at work in the arts. At an early age I was involved in modeling, drawing, and oil painting and I have been taking fine art commissions for a long time.
In my twenties, I became a professional graphic designer with a firm in Phoenix. Then I started a graphic design company in Albuquerque. I was commissioned to paint a large mural upon the walls of the Insurance Building at 610 Gold Avenue in downtown Albuquerque. This mural, entitled "Spring Cottonwoods," won Beautiful Albuquerque Award in May of 1986 and was the first large scale art piece done in the downtown area.
At that time I began to believe that any art medium taken to its logical conclusion becomes another medium and therefore all art media are interconnected in one way or another. This realization has provided me with great freedom of thought in my approach to art and woodworking.
I relocated to Santa Fe in 1987. This transition proved to be avery meaningful one for me artistically and I found myself involved with fine woodworking. I studied door and furniture making as well as wood finishing with some of the great craftsmen of Northern New Mexico. My devotion to the discovery of authentic New Mexico styling has been steadfast. Some innovations have come about along the way that provide the character of my work as it is today. I specialize in the application of patinas and texturing that serve to transform ordinary lumber into fine art. I can create replicas of many traditional pieces but I enjoy building original designs as well.
Lately I have found myself bringing the simplicity and natural beauty of exotic woods to the forefront. Contemporary Southwest architecture calls for something different and exciting. My latest development is a design system that I call WovenWoods. It speaks to the light and refreshing sensations of the desert, an environment from which many new and beautiful homes are emerging. WovenWoods accents two essential. elements of woodcraft: grain and spacing. The sticking is interwoven, creating an unusual and often delightful visual effect. The wood grains presents the pure beauty of nature.
Some of the wood species that I have chosen to use are lacewood, zebra, wenge, mahogany, and purple heart. With so many beautiful woods to choose from I look forward to creating one unique design after another. The WovenWoods style may be used to create doors, furnishings, cabinetry, sculpture, wall murals, lighting, etc. In fact, I think design applications are as limitless as the imagination itself.
