Dan and Julie moved to El Paso in 1998. In addition to raising their three boys, the couple also runs Millennium Homes with an emphasis on architecture and culture. To keep the focus on detail and master craftsmanship, Dan and Julie only build seven to ten homes per year. “Each home is unique,” Julie says. “We never build the same house twice.”
Their showcase home, featured in the 2006 El Paso Parade of Homes, is all about the details. Custom floor mosaics, exposed rafter tails, wrought iron ornamentation and layered wall surfaces all help to create an authentic Spanish Colonial home. The stenciling on the walls and ceilings throughout the home really makes it special.
Sharon Rollans of Las Vegas, Nevada, did all the faux painting and artistic stenciling throughout the home. In the formal dining room, stenciling moves up the wall and across the ceiling, giving the room a classic, old world look. Endless hours atop a twenty-foot ladder create unparallel detail in the home. The results are definitely worth the time and effort. “When you see these types of details, you realize the amount of attention that went into the home. It’s a work of art for us,” Julie says.
Along with artistic detail, the home offers 4,300 square feet of rooms flowing from one to another, including an additional 1,850 square feet of outside living area with a courtyard welcoming guests to the home and three oversized porches. While complete comfort can be found throughout the home, it is hard to stay inside with an elaborate cabana and outdoor kitchen surrounded by a large yard with pool, Jacuzzi and fire pit. “The weather here is ideal. We wanted to utilize the outdoors as much as we could, so more time could be spent outdoors,” Dan says.
The home, which was inspired by a historic cultural monument – the C.E. Toberman Estate in West Hollywood – offers authentic Spanish detail, including Talavera tile, knotty alder cabinetry, clay tile roofs, rustic wood doors and trim and Saltillo floors.
Dan and Julie don’t worry much anymore about missing the Spanish Colonial architecture they so loved in California. With their attention to detail and ability to provide a unique, state-of-the-art home, they are bringing the old world Spanish style to El Paso.
