Mark & Norma Woolf

Mark and Norma Woolf built a home that is both a treasure chest of antiques and fine furnishings and also a fabulous place to entertain. They started looking for the ideal location in 2006 and that October purchased 12 acres with a house on it nestled between pecan groves and the Rio Grande. They could have built from scratch but chose to expand the existing home that was already on the site. Together they developed the site plan and the working floor plan, taking into consideration the best elements of the existing house and adding structure to accommodate their goals. The overall design was Tuscan and each old and new element was designed to fit that theme.

Mark is a dentist by profession and now oversees a group of Kid’s Kare dental offices, which he founded. He has always had an interest in home construction and development. He teamed with Will Harse to form Mesilla Valley Custom Homes, Inc. Mark and Norma’s new Mesilla property was the primary construction focus during 2007 and 2008, with them eventually moving into the completed house during December 2008.

Mark is an avid golfer and auto collector and Norma and Mark together love to entertain family and friends. They both maintain active daily lives in business and social settings and needed to design a home that was both elegant and convenient. While many elements of the main house were to be upgraded, the first focus was on the outdoor and indoor entertaining area and garage and workshop. Two structures were added to the site. A 3000 square foot 12-car garage and workshop was constructed to provide safe storage for the autos and a workshop for Mark. There is also a putting green and sand traps on the north side of the property in case Mark wants to tune up before meeting golfing buddies at one of the nearby golf courses.

Directly behind the house a deluxe 1200 square foot pool house was designed and built. It includes a full kitchen, bar and game area plus a fitness center. The pool house borders the south end of the pool and is designed with fully opening retractable Lanai doors to allow the pool house to be fully exposed to the summer breezes, pool and outdoor entertaining area. The north side of the pool area is a covered portico with stone columns, plentiful lounge seating and an outdoor barbecue area. The centerpiece of the outdoor living area is a beautifully designed infinity edge swimming pool and four-sided raised black granite infinity edge spa. The area also includes an evening fire pit, lots of lounge chairs and seating. Gas tiki torches line the eastside of the outdoor area. The outside area flows well and is one of the most spectacular outdoor living areas ever featured in Ventanas. Mark Nash was called in to complete the tropical paradise with palm trees, grass and shrubbery.

Moving inside the house, Mark and Norma improved on the original construction by adding a new front entry, polished columns near the front entry and a special entry-area chandelier. Diamond luster finishing was applied to the walls and hand-scraped wood flooring was added in the family room and master bedroom. The master bedroom was fully reworked and is centered on a stone and marble fireplace. The large antique bed and draperies create an old-world ambience that truly ties into the Tuscan theme. Just down the hall is a special bedroom decorated by daughter, Gabrielle.
