Compared to other parts of the country, southern New Mexico has a fairly long growing season. While other towns across the nation are under snow, communities here are enjoying plenty of sunshine with just a slight chill in the air. If you dread the end of warm weather and beautiful blooms, consider resurrecting an old idea...the greenhouse. Today’s greenhouses don’t have to be made of wood and glass, cost a fortune or take days to assemble. Modern plastics do the job just as well, are inexpensive, take up less space and can be assembled and disassembled quickly and easily.
Portable and easy-to-assemble greenhouses come in a range of sizes. Start the growing season early with a seed house or extend it with a planthouse that will protect against winter cold. Some larger models also have screened doors and windows that allow for circulation and protect against plant pests. They’ll also protect you from mosquitoes and flies while you read, picnic, or lounge in a Jacuzzi. Don’t let winter defeat your green thumb or your enthusiasm!
